Two areas I need to improve on in my writing are word choice and
connection to a thesis or theme. I found word choice challenging because I would
have a feeling in mind that I want to convey, but I couldn’t find the perfect
word. I want to work on this by using a thesaurus when I write and using my vocabulary
to my benefit, so I can find the perfect word. Another area I struggled in was
staying on topic. This wouldn’t necessarily show in my final draft, but while I
wrote, I would stop and read the paragraph I had just written, and it would be
hard to connect it to my thesis or theme. To fix this, I want to be more
detailed in my outlines, so I can know exactly what to write before I begin.
It is important to fix these mistakes so my writing can be as good
as possible. Word choice is significant when it comes to the rhetoric situation
because if I am writing a formal paper, I wouldn’t want to use words like “good”
or “bad” because it wouldn’t fit the situation. For obvious reasons, staying on
topic is very important. The whole point of writing a paper is to expand on the
central theme and losing the topic in the writing would defeat the whole
purpose. However, next year these two struggles of mine will be the main focus
for my writing so I can improve as a writer.
